My Favorite Songs of 2015

Yet again, it has been a while. I guess my move to Chicago and the changes that come along with starting a career have affected my motivation to continue writing about music as often as I used to. Nevertheless, I’ve continued to keep up on what has been released, I do my best to listen to a portion of it, and I still like to share my opinions. So here we are, with my song highlights for 2015.

The following list is in no particular order and is meant to feature favorite songs that were not also on my favorite albums of the year.

“Only One” by Kanye West – West rang in the New Year for us last January, and the single has stood the 2015 test of time for me. With Sir Paul McCartney on keyboard, the tone of the music and the emotion behind Ye’s lyrics are too real and intimate to ignore.

“Sunday Candy” by Donnie Trumpet and The Social Experiment – Fronted by Chance the Rapper, this Chicago group has made waves in 2015. Their album Surf was (I believe) the first ever to be released free on iTunes, and is not only a testament to the power of collaboration, but also the new paradigm for independent success. “On the Regular” by Shamir – A four-on-the-floor, house-influenced beat with cowbell, a unique countertenor, and clever lyrics. What else do you really need? Shamir makes me feel young again, and I can’t wait to see how his music develops over his career.

“The Way You’d Love Her” by Mac Demarco

Mac has grown on me significantly over the past couple years, and this song has to be one of his best yet. The slippery guitar riff fits in well with Demarco’s aesthetic, and the solo is something new from that can keep longtime fans interested.
